More and more of us are noticing that the backdrops to scenes in newlyweds’ wedding photos are looking a little different nowadays. Whether it’s the white sands of Hawaii or the vibrant colors of Mexico, couples are now choosing locations such as these in which to take their marriage vows over the more traditional brick building and grassy platform venues.
The current popularity of destination weddings is in part due to the increasing accessibility of cheaper air travel. The internet now makes booking-up travel and accommodation particularly easy, and when it comes to arranging a destination wedding, the same is true. Nowadays, organizing the flowers and photographer aren’t going to give a would-be bride as big a headache as trying to decide where to get married is!
Bride’s Magazine states that 72 percent of destination weddings take place in the US, with the most popular locations being Hawaii, Mexico, and on cruises. Some up-and-coming destinations include Greece, Scotland, Italy, Fiji, South Africa, Thailand, Belize, Costa Rica, and Canada. So quite a selection!
Most couples opting for a destination wedding do so because they want something a little bit special for their big day—and something unique. And getting wed in Hawaii or Mexico can provide more than a picture-perfect wedding backdrop; it can also give a couple the opportunity to incorporate aspects of that country’s traditions and customs into their ceremony—something they definitely wouldn’t get back at home!
The obvious advantage to a destination wedding is that all who attend get to have a mini-vacation as well as celebrating the happy couple’s special day. Inviting, say, a group of 20 to a destination wedding can work out more economical than hosting a huge reception for 200 guests back home in a luxury hotel. Destination wedding etiquette generally calls for wedding guests to pay their own air fares, while the bride and groom meet the costs of accommodation, and food and beverages at the wedding. And arranging some sort of activity for your guests while they’re with you—a boat trip or excursion to a local market—is a lovely touch that will be appreciated by all.Share This!
